Bear Creek Fire grows to 2,500 acres
A pre-evacuation notice remains in effect for parts of Highway 34 through Sybille Canyon.
Albany County Emergency Management announced late last night that the Bear Creek Fire, which erupted yesterday, has grown to cover 2,500 acres with unknown containment.
“There are approximately 60 personnel from multiple Albany & Platte County departments and a Bureau of Land Management crew on scene,” states a social media post from Emergency Management. “Pre-Evacuation Notices remain in effect for HWY 34 from Morton Pass on the West to CR 12 on the East to include all of CR 12.”
The pre-evacuation notice was issued around 1:30 p.m. Thursday. In a post also shared by the Albany County Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Management urged those in the affected area to be prepared.
“Make preparations to evacuate the area in the event that the Mandatory Evacuation Order is issued,” the post states. “You do not need to leave at this time, but should begin preparing to leave with your essential belongings, pets and livestock. Once a Mandatory Evacuation Order is issued, you will not be granted re-entry into the area until it is deemed safe and the order has been lifted.”
In the comments below Emergency Management’s post, several residents say they could offer up pasture space for evacuated livestock.
“Praying for the wind to die down,” writes Rep. Trey Sherwood, whose district — House District 14 — includes the Sybille Canyon.
