Christina Havig wins $1,000 from county vaccine incentive program

Christina Havig, one of Albany County’s newest residents, won $1,000 this week from the community’s vaccine incentive program.
Havig said the award will help her family settle in.
“We’re building a house so we’re looking to use that money to help furnish our new home,” she said. “Hopefully it raises awareness and helps more people to feel comfortable getting the vaccine.”
Havig moved to Laramie from Virginia in July and got her first shot soon after. She received the final shot on Aug. 20 — exactly one month before she would win $1,000.
In Virginia, Havig was busy with the upcoming move to Laramie, and the people around her were vaccinated, masking and generally being safe — so the vaccine seemed like less of an immediate necessity.
That changed when she got to Wyoming.
“Unfortunately, Wyoming doesn’t take COVID very seriously and I didn’t feel safe here — there’s not a lot of people who wear masks, there’s not a lot of precautions,” she said. “I wasn’t holding out to get the vaccine, I just hadn’t gotten sick so I was being cautious. But with such low vaccine rates here and nobody taking precautions, I got worried.”
Now vaccinated, Havig said it’s nice to feel comfortable in public spaces again.
“I’m excited to go to a fall festival and go trick-or-treating and not being worried about it,” she said.
Partners from across Albany County launched the Vaccine Incentive Program to promote health and safety throughout the community and to increase access to the vaccine. The partners behind the program represent a wide swath of the community, including local government, healthcare providers, the faith community, businesses and nonprofits, as well as Albany County Public Health and the University of Wyoming.
The Vaccine Incentive Program is awarding $25 to individuals receiving their first or second shot at any of the pharmacies throughout the city.
Additionally, $1000 will be awarded weekly.
“Every Monday, beginning September 6 – October 4, there will be one weekly cash drawing, entries are open to residents who have received their first vaccine,” the program website states. “This community vaccine push celebrates those who have already received their full COVID-19 vaccination as well as thanking those who are choosing to take their shot now.”
In October, several grand prizes will be awarded. They include:
$2,500 cash prize
Homecoming package (UW Homecoming tickets and Visit Laramie Swag Bag)
STAY-cation package (Airbnb weekend retreat and downtown gift cards)
Recreation package (Laramie Rec Center passes, Pilot Hill swag, downtown gift cards)
The program can also provide financial assistance for the cost of daycare, transportation, dinner or missed work — whatever costs are incurred to get the vaccine and recover from effects.
