Erin Krieger joins the Laramie Reporter
As the Laramie Reporter's 2021 Science Journalism Intern, Krieger will cover scientific topics, as well as the Albany County, Laramie and University of Wyoming communities.
University of Wyoming student Erin Krieger will join the Laramie Reporter for the summer of 2021. Krieger is an environment and natural resources and ag communication major. She is funded through the university’s Science Journalism Internship Program.
The internship is part of a larger program to promote science journalism in the state of Wyoming — a program that is itself part of UW’s $20 million microbiology grant from the National Science Foundation.
Krieger is the first writer to ever intern with the Laramie Reporter, and the outlet’s second-ever writer after its founder, Jeff Victor.
The Laramie Reporter asked its newest writer about her background, herself and her goals for the summer.
Laramie Reporter: Where are you from and what brought you to Laramie and UW?
Erin Krieger: I am originally from Lebanon County, PA. I was attracted to UW for the awesome departments my majors fall under, and to give living in the West a try. I have fallen in love with Laramie and have been living here full-time for a year now.
LR: What are your interests and hobbies?
EK: I love kayaking, riding horses and hiking with my rescue mini blue heeler, Kita. I am looking forward to my first full summer here and exploring all the West has to offer.
LR: What drew you to try your hand at journalism?
EK: I have always loved to write and became interested in the craft of storytelling through my high school FFA conservation public speaking experience.
LR: How did you get involved with the Science Journalism Internship Program?
EK: I took a Media, Science, and Society course with Associate Professor Kristen Landreville at UW, my mentor for this opportunity. My only stipulation with applying for this internship was my desire to stay in Laramie over the summer. I was granted the opportunity to work with Jeff here at the Laramie Reporter and I am looking forward to a summer full of writing stories for and about this community.
LR: What do you hope to learn at the Laramie Reporter?
EK: I hope to learn how to apply my course materials from the first half of my undergraduate to the science-journalistic writing process through this internship. I am additionally eager to learn more about Laramie as a community under Jeff’s mentorship.
