City staff will introduce rental regulations today during a meeting of the Laramie City Council. The ordinance sets health and safety standards for rental units, requiring them to have professionally maintained plumbing, heating and electricity and to be free of pests. The ordinance would require landlords to register rental units and would establish a complaint system through which tenants could alert the city manager's office to violations of the new standards. The city manager would be empowered to enforce those standards, fining noncompliant landlords or revoking their registration.

Several of the public entities being sued for their COVID-19 prevention measures have filed motions to dismiss. Former Laramie High School student Grace Smith, her father and other parents across Wyoming filed a lawsuit last month laden with conspiracy theories and misinformation. Now several of the school districts and other entities named in the suit have moved to dismiss, arguing the lawsuit doesn’t belong in federal court and fails to state its aim directly.

The state health officer urged parents of children aged 5 to 11 to get vaccinated. Wyoming Public Radio interviewed Alexia Harrist, who said COVID-19 can be dangerous or even deadly for children and that children can also be carriers, transporting the disease to even more vulnerable adults in their lives. Harrist said the goal of vaccination is to return to some semblance of normal life. That could include potentially relaxing mask requirements — as the Albany County School Board discussed at a recent meeting.

Diner, Drive-ins and Dives host Guy Fieri got a taste of Laramie last week, filming segments for his show in a handful of downtown Laramie restaurants. The Laramie Boomerang reports the DDD crew was in Sweet Melissa Cafe and filmed in other restaurants downtown. Diners, Drive-ins and Dives has run on the Food Network for 33 seasons and has made Fieri an American cultural icon.

The Laramie Middle School cross country team won the Nike Cross Regionals Northwest meet in Boise. LaramieLive reports the LMS team went undefeated in their home state and won a 5A cross country race in Denver before crushing the competition in Boise. Six of Laramie’s 11 runners placed in the top 14, while all 11 set personal records. Laramie’s team score was 21. Bozeman, Montana came in second with 42, followed by North Boise with 64. Eighth-grader Libby Roesler took third place for girls with a time of 11:31:50, while her classmate, Darin Binning, took fifth for boys with 10:26:20. Middle schoolers run 3Ks, a little under 2 miles.
