Laramie PrideFest in full swing
Many communities recognize June as LBGTQ+ Pride Month, acknowledging and celebrating a diverse and marginalized community. Laramie is no different.
Laramie PrideFest has returned for a fifth year. While events are happening all month, many are planned for the last week of June, which is internationally recognized as Pride Week.
“Laramie PrideFest is focused on being more inclusive and present in the community,” said Cauncey Perkins with Laramie PrideFest. “I’m excited for more people to be able to come and feel comfortable to join, smile and laugh. And for those who don’t identify with the community to come and see what we’re about. I feel like the more people know, the less people fear.”
The Laramie PrideFest staff are looking forward to a variety of in-person events following a fully virtual 2020 PrideFest. An LGBTQ+ Picnic and Outdoor Trivia event kicked off the month's festivities June 8. More than 40 were in attendance.
“The numbers of those interested in getting involved have skyrocketed from last year,” Perkins said.“We’re just excited to see some smiling faces and have a great time.”
Upcoming events include the June 25 Drag and Burlesque Show at the Laramie Railroad Depot, and Pride in the Park the following day, which boasts live performers and a wide variety of vendors. Both events are still accepting entries for performers. Interested parties can direct inquiries to PrideFest organizer Daniel Galbreath at danielgalbreath@gmail.com.
PrideFest will end with a candlelight vigil in memory of Matthew Shepard on the University of Wyoming campus. Candles will be provided to those in attendance.
