Of Note: Landfill Speed Limit
Not enough for a story, just enough to note. Welcome to the Laramie Reporter’s occasional “Of Note” series, where we highlight the oddities that make a town.

Whether you’re running glass recycling to the dump or just hauling old furniture to its final resting place, you’ve probably noticed some unorthodox signage at the Laramie Landfill and Recycling Center.
A sign at the landfill’s turn-in implores motorists to keep their speedometer at or under — precisely — 14.75 miles per hour.
Solid Waste Manager JR Slingerland said the strangeness of that sign is the point.
“The reason for the oddball speed limit is to get people to notice it and think about their speed,” he said. “Basically, we want customers to slow down a little and this was a fun way to do it. Definitely more noticeable than a plain 15 MPH sign.”
The sign was added about a decade ago. Slingerland said it serves its purpose.
“It is effective for the most part,” he said. “Of course there are a few people that still speed a bit, but everyone notices it and it brings a few smiles to the customers.”
The Laramie Landfill is located at 162 Roger Canyon Road and is open 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. every day but Sunday and holidays.
Laramie has single-stream recycling, meaning aluminum, paper and other recyclables go into the same bin. In 2024, Laramie collected 2.5 million pounds of single-stream recyclables.
Separately, Laramie collected more than 132,000 pounds of glass. Glass cannot be put into single-stream bins. It must be taken to the dump separately, by individuals, but Laramie residents can do so free of charge.
Have you noticed anything mildly interesting around town? The sort of peculiarity that begs to be explained but is too small to make a fuss about? Am I the only one concerned with the proliferation of loud & agressive driving and Hot Rodding music on the streets of Laramie ?
