Jeff, this was an excellent explanation of the UW decision making and challenges facing the Campus President after a clouded decision was brought to light. I appreciate your journalist prowess and clarification regarding this situation. Well done!
Hope to see you this Saturday, weather permitting, as I’ve been informed this may be one of our last opportunities to express our opinions in a peaceful protest as the administration contemplates the implementation of the insurrection act.
I met you at the rally in front of the courthouse. I was on the south side of the street and you and I talked for a while and I was encouraging you to stick with it because I think these are very valuable posts and you are doing a great service for the community, especially since the Boomerang and other publications have been so devoid of real news!!
Thanks again and by the way, our rally was 700 to 800 people, just one of over 1400 rallies across the country that totaled 5.2 million in attendance! Thanks again for everything. I hope you got some good pictures.
Sure…Wright did not meet his tier 1 goals 2x - imo he isn’t a good leader at all - Seidel is uninspiring and remote - lots more to say on this question but hey it’s a small town.
I understand I guess the thing that surprise me was the $500,000 that was taken out of his program without him being aware of it until the last moment and where it ended up. In addition, having total faculty support kind of showed that there was some prejudice against Wright that I didn’t understand by the administration. Well, he did not meet his tier one goals, it was explained in at least one reporting that he had been working toward that goal and that’s not something that can happen immediately, but as I understand takes a process of time.
Well there’s a lot to say about how money moves around the University. And sometimes it’s very easy to say do as I say not as I do. Who says he was resoundingly “liked”? There’s achieving goals - working towards them - having a team in place to accomplish or simply missing the mark. UW should and can have one of the best Engineering programs in the country -
Interesting how NOTHING was said in Faculty Senate letter OR President Sidel's early morning email about that money transfer ! 🤔 Looks like the rug has a HUGE $500,000 lump under it. 😡
The BOT has too damned much power. We need to get back to the model of shared governance. I don't think that Ed has done us many favors but when the BOT has that much power you have to kowtow.
How about both of them hit the highway of new opportunities. They are both uninspiring and the university needs a jolt of new leadership. One donor regardless of their generosity should not have so much sway and neither should our local reps. The BOT is doing their job. UW should be doing all it can to grow and support computing for the arriving AI world and crypto. Politics is so engrained on campus that it’s caused the atmosphere to be stifling.
Wright has been highly competent as a dean and as a manager. His demotion, because he did not support nepotism, is grounds for dismissal of Seidel (who has also performed poorly in other ways - for example, in the management of "town and gown" relations). Why hasn't the Board, which met this morning to discuss these issues, fired Seidel already?
I 101% disagree with your take on Engineering - it has suffered the same problems as the university at large - they both need to go and the university needs systemic changes.
This isn’t about nepotism - it’s about competence. He didn’t meet his mark and was hauled before the board and missed again. Engineering needs new leadership. And probably the uni too.
The Engineering School was doing just fine under Wright's leadership. The University as a whole, however, is losing enrollment. This is, in part, due to state politics and in part due to a Board of Trustees that's out of touch. The University is also becoming more insular, far less connected than it once was to the community that surrounds it. A new president, and turnover on the Board, could help to turn these trends around.

Thank you Lynne, I put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into the work here so it's always nice to hear it's appreciated

I did get some decent photos! I did not make a post on the site but I did share them to instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/DIFV9yAxsu7/?img_index=1

I agree - mostly - with you - I actually think both of them need to go.
Care to say why?
The letter from the Ellbogen Foundation should cause some Board of Trustee resignations beyond Seidel's.
You can't have a top anything if no one can trust you and you've demonstrated failed leadership.

Seems like business as usual is going on with Seidel , little to no information worth a damn and behind the scenes shenanigan's !
Legislators ignorant maga interference just another day in the destruction of democracy even on campus of our schools!
Sad times in store for America!
The only legislators that Jeff mentioned were the 2 local dems… just sayin’

Seidel and his board of cronies need to step down.

Jeff has nailed it again - awesome reporting!!!
